Nelson first visited Gibraltar in 1776 age 18, as a young midshipman serving on board HMS Worcester a third rate, 64-gun ship which was on convoy duty. Nelson went ashore with dispatches to be forwarded to the British Consul in Cadiz.

Marian Anderson honored with U.S. postage stamp
Legendary operatic star Marian Anderson was honored today when the U.S. Postal Service issued a new commemorative postage stamp recognizing her life and accomplishments. Symbolically, the first-day-of-issue ceremony took place at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, the venue where she was once prohibited from performing because of her skin color.

Canada Post Fly Fishing stamps are the catch of the day!

On February 4, 2005, Canadians will have four new stamps honouring the masterful art that is fishing flies. US Presidential Libraries Issue

Austrian Skier commemorated: Eberharter to appear on new stamp

Born on 24th March 1969, Stefan Eberharter was encouraged to ski from a very early age by his father and two brothers and participated in his first competition at the age of six.

Newly Immigrated Species on Definitive Stamps
The greater cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) was first noticed in Aland approximately eight years ago. The increasing number of fish in Aland waters is the main reason why the cormorants now breed in Aland. The bird's plumage is not water-repellent and it can often be seen with its wings held out to air-dry.

Forsetation in Iceland
Organized forestation began in Hallormsstadaskogur in the east of Iceland 100 years ago when Stefan Kristjansson was hired as a caretaker of the area. Stefan had studied forestry in Copenhagen.

Hepburn stamp causes stir
The fortunate collector who found an example of the withdrawn German Audrey Hepburn stamp has been told that it could fetch up to 50,000 euros at auction. Experts are advising he sells soon though before another example surfaces as collectors across Germany start to search frantically.

Russian Regions
The Koryak Autonomous Region was formed on December 10, 1930. It occupies the northern part of Kamchatka peninsula, adjacent to it a part of the mainland and Karaginsky island as well. The region contains 4 administrative areas, 2 urban villages, 28 villages and there are no cities there. The administrative centre of the region is the urban village Palana. The stamp depicts Koryaksky volcano, a view of Palana village, a snow sheep, a helicopter, "Mengo" dancing company.

Norway commemorate artist: renowned fairytale illustrator saluted
Even as a boy, Erik Werenskiold (1855-1938) dreamed of becoming an artist, but his father wanted him to study law. While he was a student, the urge to draw and paint became stronger and stronger and, on the advice of Norwegian painter Adolph Tidemand, he travelled to Munich in 1875. A year later he was admitted to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts.

Something to crow about - Canada Post hatches stamps to mark year of the rooster!
Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come bid him farewell before he departed the Earth. Only 12 showed up and, to show his appreciation, he named a year for each animal in the order of its arrival: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep/Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. On February 9, the Chinese will celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Rooster – he who heralds in the day and announces its exit. Canada Post will start the festivities on January 7, 2005, by issuing two stamps honouring this important celebration.

German Paintings
The special stamp series "German painting" presents important German works of art. The current stamp shows a detail from a small Triptychon. That is a "folding picture", with which the center piece with for seitenfluegeln attached on the left and on the right can be locked. The painting was created around 1350 for Cologne monasteries the pc. Klara by a Cologne workshop and is today in the constant exhibition of the Wallraf Richartz museum - Fondation Corbout in Cologne to see.
