Eureka! - Post office honours Canadian Nobel Prize winners
On October 4, 2004, some Canadians may make a discovery of their own when Canada Post issues two new stamps commemorating Canadian Nobel Prize winners Dr. Gerhard Herzberg and Dr. Michael Smith. The stamps will be unveiled during the opening ceremonies of the 4th World Conference of Science Journalists being held in Montreal, Quebec.

USPS unveil holiday stamps
USPS yesterday unveiled a set of new stamps which will be released to celebrate the upcoming holidays.
A new Christmas stamp features Lorenzo Monaco's portrait of Madonna and child and will be issued on 14th October, whilst a stamp celebrating Hanukkah will be issued a day later.

UPU Congress 2004
The Universal Postal Union Congress (UPU) is held every five years as the supreme authority of the UPU and brings together diplomats and postal operators from member countries. The 23rd UPU Congress will be held in Romania, Bucharest. Romania is the first East European country to host this major event.

100 years of the incorporation of Floridsdorf into Vienna
Today's Floridsdorf, Vienna's 21st District, with an area of 44.46m2, stands on land cultivated and developed by early man. The discovery there of stone axes suggests that it was inhabited as early as the Neolithic Age (ca. 4000 to 2000 BC).

Russia: 100th Birth Anniversary S N Rerikh
Svyatoslav Nikolaevich Rerikh (1904-1994), a painter. Since 1919 he studied at the Royal Academy of Science in London then at the Columbia University and the Harvard University in the USA. In 1923 he first visited India and in 1936 he resided there. Following the manner of his father later works he painted portraits, symbolic and genre pieces but landscapes prevailed. The stamp bears the self-portrait against the background of his painting "Two Alps" (1934).

Sickle Cell Disease Awareness stamp to be issued by U.S. Postal Service
To raise awareness, encourage early testing, treatment, and focus attention on finding a cure, the U.S. Postal Service will issue the 37-cent Sickle Cell Disease Awareness postage stamp on Sept. 29 in Atlanta at the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America's 32nd Annual Convention.

250th Birth Anniversary Russian Emperor Paul I
The coronation of Paul I took place in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Moscow Kremlin on the 5th of April 1797. In the day of crowing a few legislative deeds were promulgated. Paul I issued the Manifesto of tree day corvee. The manifesto said: "that no one would in any way dare to make peasants work on Sundays…". At the same time, it was proposed to use statute labor no more than three days a week and the rest of the weekdays a peasant could work for himself. The manifesto was somewhat a recommendation and a starting point for limiting and abolition of serfdom in Russia.

John Wayne hits the trail as 10th legends of Hollywood U.S. Postage stamp
An image of legendary actor John Wayne is the centerpiece of a new 37-cent commemorative postage stamp issued today by the U.S. Postal Service. The ceremony was held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. A crowd of family members, invited guests, philatelists and tourists applauded as the 10th entry in the U.S. Postal Service's popular Legends of Hollywood stamp series was dedicated.

1. Cape Sugarbird: This unique sugarbird is easily recognised by its exceptionally long wispy tail. Its preferred habitat is stands of flowering proteas on mountain slopes in the Fynbos. The Cape Sugarbird is confined to the Fynbos biome in the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces of South Africa. It has a complex song, including starling-like chirps and whistles, as well as harsh, grating noises.
