New Canadian stamp honours the dawn of European settlement
The area is a monument to the beginning of Canada and the endurance of those who first settled the New World. In 1604, St. Croix Island, located along what is now the border between Canada and the United States, was one of the first sites of European settlement in North America. Though the community was ultimately abandoned, the lessons learned there led to more successful settlements and a lasting French presence in North America. Canada Post is proud to commemorate the 400th anniversary of this remarkable landing with a new stamp to be issued on June 26, 2004.
