Iceland's Herring Adventure
At the turn of the 20th century Icelandic fishermen and shipowners learned to use new fishing techniques. When foreign markets for cod closed during the worldwide recession in the thirties, excellent herring fisheries may have brought Iceland financal independence and herring surely had its share in Iceland becoming a sovereign country in 1944 after 5 centuries of Danish rule. In good years the value of herring products amounted to 35% of the annual GNP. The first herring factories were built in Siglufjordur in 1911.

Canada Post to honour Cunard and Allan - Pioneers of the transatlantic mail service
Throughout the early 1800s, thousands of immigrants arrived in what was to become Canada, seeking a new beginning. As they built their new lives in a new land, many sought to maintain a link and communicate news with friends and relatives overseas, leading to the creation of transatlantic steamship mail service. Not one, but two shipping moguls were able to fulfill this most essential service. The "Cunard Line," run by Sir Samuel Cunard, began to deliver the mail from Liverpool to Halifax in 1840. Similarly, the "Allan Line," run by Sir Hugh Allan, began to ship mail from Liverpool to Quebec City in 1856. On May 28th, Canada Post will pay tribute to these men for their mail delivery innovation by issuing two commemorative 49c stamps.

Back for a second year, Canada Post will issue a new set of stamps showcasing more works painted in Canada by artist John James Audubon. The new stamps, the second set of a three-year series, will be available for sale at post offices across the country as of May 14, 2004.
