Iceland: Summer flowers
Marigold
Tagetes patula Marigolds are popular garden flowers in Iceland. There are many varieties of these flowers. They have beautiful but strangely colored blooms. A single flower may feature tinges of brown, yellow and orange. They are sensitive to frost and need sun and heat. Some of the varieties have to be pre-cultivated indoors starting as early as March or April. Marigolds decrease the proliferation of the cabbage fly (delia radicum) which does great damage to herb gardens. They have been used in Reykjavik educational gardens and elsewehere to keep the cabbage fly away.

Expeditions in Greenland II '150-year Anniversary of Otto Sverdrup'
In spite of his considerable arctic expedition achievements around the turn of the 20th century, the Norwegian Otto Sverdrup, has always been overshadowed by the Dane Knud Rasmussen as well as his famous fellow countrymen Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. In many ways it is a pity, because not only did Otto Sverdrup participate in Fridtjof Nansen's expedition and was captain on the ship "Fram" during the expedition to the Arctic Ocean, he also undertook his own research expedition with the ship "Fram" in the Canadian Arctic over a period of four years. Therefore it is now time to celebrate the considerable arctic expedition achievements by Otto Sverdrup.

Arrest of Devote
Sainte Devote is the patron of Monaco but also from Corsica and more generally of the Mediterranean Sea. Arrested, jailed and judged because she was Christian, she was stoned by the Romans. Her body was saved by sympathisers and put into a small boat bound for the African coast. However, the craft head for the North and a dove guided the skiff to the "Vallon des Gaumattes" where a chapel dedicated to the Martyrdom has been built. The Patron Saint protected the Principality many times against the assailants and illness. A boat is burned every year the evening before the 27th of January, feast and public holiday, to evoke the bonfire and the theft attempt of her relics, preserved in Monaco.
